Bespoke Green Wall at Orbis, Staines
We were appointed to design, engineer, supply and install a bespoke Green Wall support system for the Orbis development at Causeway Park.
The project enabled an industrial, commercial environment to be enhanced through the introduction of vertical greening, with the new Green Wall contributing to biodiversity, aesthetics and long-term environmental performance.
The solution combined a tensioned Webnet wire mesh system installed onto a free-standing structural frame, creating a robust, yet lightweight and elegant plant support structure.
At MMA Architectural Systems, we specialise in engineered Green Wall support systems that combine structural integrity with design flexibility. Each installation is tailored to site conditions, plant species and anticipated growth patterns.
What MMA delivered for the client:
- Full structural engineering design and calculations
- Fabrication of a bespoke free-standing steel frame
- Supply of tensioned stainless steel mesh
- Complete installation and on-site coordination
The design was created to support both the architectural approach and the practical demands of a living Green Wall. This meant accounting for wind loading, dead and live loads, saturated plant weight, long term growth forces and ongoing environmental exposure.
Engineering calculations were carried out to assess structural performance under site specific conditions, particularly wind and planting loads, while the frame was detailed to maintain clean, refined lines without compromising strength.
The result is a structurally self-sufficient installation that sits comfortably within the landscape scheme, providing a durable and visually integrated Green Wall solution.
Jakob Webnet Stainless Steel Mesh
The Green Wall incorporates Jakob Rope Systems Webnet, a high-performance stainless steel mesh system widely specified for architectural greening applications.
Manufactured from marine-grade stainless steel, Webnet provides:
- High tensile strength
- Corrosion resistance
- Flexibility for complex geometries
- Minimal visual obstruction
- An ideal training surface for climbing plants
The mesh was tensioned precisely within the frame, creating a durable and adaptable support structure that allows vegetation to establish and thrive over time.
Installation
We supplied and installed the Webnet stainless steel mesh system, delivering the project to a high standard throughout. Our scope included designing the system, installing and correctly tensioning the mesh, and meeting all site requirements. Careful attention to detail during installation supports long term performance and ensures a clean finish that fits the overall design of the development.
Sustainability & Environmental Value
Green Wall systems provide significant environmental benefits within commercial developments. At Orbis, the installation contributes to:
- Enhanced biodiversity
- Improved microclimate conditions
- Helping the building blend into its surroundings
- Long-term greening of the built environment
The use of Jakob stainless steel components ensures that the system offers longevity and recyclability, providing a sustainable solution.
The completed Green Wall at Orbis provides a modern, environmentally conscious architectural feature that softens the built environment while maintaining structural requirements.
This project highlights MMA Architectural Systems’ ability to deliver fully engineered Green Wall solutions, covering design, supply and installation. By combining structural expertise with high quality stainless steel systems, we create durable and visually striking vertical greening installations.
